Farmer's autumn
As summer draws to a close, the so-called fifth season begins in SalzburgerLand – the Bauernherbst. This long-standing series of events has, for many years, stood for living traditions, rural craftsmanship, regional delicacies and authentic folk culture. From mid-August to the end of October, more than 2.000 events take place throughout SalzburgerLand – ranging from farm and harvest festivals to cattle drives, markets, music and workshops. At the heart of it all are rural life, traditional cuisine and time-honoured customs, brought to life in an authentic atmosphere.
When Autumn Comes Alive with Music
This year’s theme, “G’sungen & G’spielt”, highlights the rich musical diversity of the Bauernherbst. From traditional parlour and family music to small folk ensembles, music can be experienced throughout SalzburgerLand and shapes the unique atmosphere of this season.
Singing, dancing and traditional sounds are an integral part of many events, making the Bauernherbst a vibrant expression of regional culture and joie de vivre.
Almabtriebsfest
In the BRUCK FUSCH | GROSSGLOCKNER region, too, the popular Almabtriebsfest is celebrated in September. The festival marks the return of the festively decorated cows, which have spent the summer on the surrounding alpine pastures – including the Piffalm – and are now returning to the valley, where they will spend the winter.
This year’s Almabtriebsfest will take place on 5 September 2026 on the grounds of the Bruck Agricultural College and is one of the highlights of the Bauernherbst. Organised by the Bruck Farmers’ Association, the Bruck Agricultural College and the BRUCK FUSCH | GROSSGLOCKNER Tourist Board, this traditional festival combines living customs with an atmospheric supporting programme.
Customs & Tradition
In keeping with tradition and custom, the cows are decorated with lovingly crafted headdresses by the hard-working helpers from the Bruck Agricultural College. The cows wear wreaths of flowers, colourful ribbons and magnificent bells, symbolising their gratitude for an accident-free and productive alpine season. Once at the bottom, the festively decorated cows can be marvelled at during the parade on the grounds of the Bruck technical college. Accompanied by various local clubs and music groups, the Almabtrieb festival is definitely worth a visit for guests and locals alike. Culinary delights are provided by the Bruck farming community with tasty regional delicacies, and farmers' market lovers in particular will get their money's worth at the festival with the lovingly produced handicrafts from local producers.
